As the demand for masks surged nationwide due to COVID-19, vulnerable groups such as the elderly and disabled have found it difficult to obtain masks, leaving them in blind spots of quarantine measures.
In response, the district proactively secured 11,000 cotton masks with fine dust and droplet blocking functions and will deliver them to all elderly residents at senior centers through the Yeongdeungpo-gu branch of the Korea Senior Citizens Association.
The cotton masks, made through volunteer talent donations from local residents, involved participation from △ Yeongdeungpo Women’s Volunteer Corps (5,000 masks) △ Daerim 1-dong Jolongbak Project Group (500 masks) △ Cotton Mask Volunteer Group (500 masks), and separately purchased 5,000 masks from the Art Creation Studio Seba-kwa, securing a total of 11,000 masks.
The district will first deliver the secured cotton masks along with a ‘COVID-19 Quarantine Supplies Kit’ to approximately 6,700 elderly residents at 167 senior centers. The kit includes △ 1 cotton mask △ 2 KF94 masks △ portable hand sanitizer △ COVID-19 prevention guidelines.
On the 24th, Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Chae Hyun-il visited the Yeongdeungpo-gu branch of the Korea Senior Citizens Association, listened to the difficulties of the elderly, and deeply empathized with their challenging situation.
He also promised to mobilize all administrative efforts to protect the lives and safety of the elderly and handed over the ‘COVID-19 Quarantine Supplies Kit.’
Thanks to the district’s early closure of senior center facilities on January 30th, the earliest among Seoul’s autonomous districts, no infections have occurred through senior center gatherings.
Additionally, the district distributed cotton masks to 3,177 people including district office officials and employees, district council members, and affiliated organizations, encouraging their use to participate in the cotton mask campaign. Masks will also be distributed to 1,077 residents such as community autonomy committee members and neighborhood leaders who volunteer.
The district plans to proactively support cotton masks to residents in need in the future, aiming to eliminate welfare blind spots and bring warmth to the local community.
