Gwangju University, the Only Local University Certified with an Illegal Stay Rate Below 1%
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju University (President Kim Hyukjong) has been certified as having an illegal stay rate of less than 1%, the only university in the Honam region to receive this certification.
On the 23rd, Gwangju University announced that it was selected as a university with an illegal stay rate of less than 1% among 22 general universities, including Seoul National University and Yonsei University, based on the Ministry of Education's '2019 Internationalization Competency Certification.'
The illegal stay rate indicator evaluates the university's systematic management of visa issuance and stay management to efficiently manage and support foreign students' stay.
With this selection, Gwangju University allows foreigners wishing to study regardless of nationality to easily apply for admission by undergoing visa screening with only the standard admission letter issued by a domestic university.
Additionally, the university will receive priority in internationalization-related policies and projects of the Ministry of Education, benefits such as autonomy in selecting foreign graduate students, additional points in the Government Scholarship Program for Korean Government Scholarship Program (GKS), and preferential participation in overseas Korean study fairs.
Furthermore, the list will be disclosed domestically and internationally in 11 languages through official Ministry of Education sites such as the Korea Study Abroad Comprehensive System and provided for use by the Ministry of Justice and foreign governments.
Jeon Jeonghwan, Director of the International Education Center at Gwangju University, said, "The time and process for foreign students to apply for visas can be greatly shortened," adding, "Certification as a university with an illegal stay rate of less than 1% is expected to have effects such as attracting excellent foreign students and expanding the number and countries of foreign students."
Also, through official Ministry of Education sites such as the Korea Study Abroad Comprehensive System, the list is disclosed domestically and internationally in 11 languages and provided for use by the Ministry of Justice and foreign governments.
