Jongno-gu, Comprehensive Cleanup of Old and Ownerless Outdoor Advertisements
March 23 to May 8: Intensive Maintenance Period in the First Half of the Year... Free Removal of Abandoned Signs on Main and Side Streets Planned
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) will carry out a comprehensive cleanup of "old and ownerless outdoor advertisements" that have been left unattended for a long time due to business closures or relocations until December.
The district is promoting this cleanup to prevent the proliferation of advertisements and create a pleasant street environment. In particular, the first half of the year, from March 23 to May 8, has been designated as the "intensive cleanup period," during which ownerless signs left unattended for a long time on main roads and side streets will be removed free of charge.
This is to prevent accidents caused by the falling of old signs in advance and to provide residents with a safe walking environment.
The targets of this outdoor advertisement cleanup are "ownerless signs" left unattended for a long time due to business closures or changes, and "dangerous signs" that are severely aged or damaged and pose safety issues.
Building owners who wish to have their signs removed can inquire with the Urban Design Division Advertisement Maintenance Team (☎2148-2753) during the approximately two-week reporting period from March 23 to April 3, and submit a sign removal consent form in person, by fax, mail, or through the local community service center.
The community service centers and the Urban Design Division will conduct on-site investigations to verify business closure and ownership status of the signs reported for removal. From April 6 to 24, they will send voluntary cleanup notices to the building owners subject to maintenance, followed by about a three-week voluntary cleanup period. Signs not cleaned up during this period will be removed. Even after the intensive cleanup period, old and ownerless signs will be accepted for reporting at any time and maintained to prevent safety accidents.
Along with this, Jongno-gu has been steadily promoting the "Beautiful Signboard Street Project" since 2008, which introduces Hangul designs on street signs fitting the status of a center for Korean cultural content, fostering local pride and promoting replacement with eco-friendly LED signs.
This year, the project will be carried out in the Changsin-Sungin area.
The target sections include Jibong-ro and Changsin-gil, where illegal and old signs densely located in this area will be improved with beautiful Hangul-centered designs by December to promote the use of Hangul, and replaced with eco-friendly LED signs to contribute to building a healthy city.
