Generating 'Electricity' from Food Waste
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, Korea Midland Power, and the Gimpo City Facilities Management Corporation have joined forces to develop technology that produces renewable energy to replace coal by utilizing food waste as a resource. The Institute announced that the three organizations signed a joint cooperation agreement on the 19th.
The three organizations will collaborate on improving food waste livestock feed facilities, producing high-quality solid fuel using food waste feed, establishing a biogas power generation and eco-friendly renewable energy generation system utilizing solid fuel, and securing eco-friendly hydrogen production technology.
The food waste solid renewable fuel to be used for power generation on a pilot basis demonstrated excellent efficiency of 6000 kcal/kg through verification experiments. This thermal power is comparable to coal currently used for power generation.
By advancing this technology, the Institute expects to solve the social issue of food waste disposal, secure economic feasibility for coal-fired power plants that relied on imported fuel to achieve the government's renewable energy supply obligation system, and reduce greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions by 8.85 million tons annually.
