Gyeonggi Northern Region to Become Control Tower for 'Transportation, Construction, and Railroads'
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has relocated all departments related to social overhead capital (SOC) such as transportation, construction, and railroads to the Uijeongbu Gyeonggi Provincial Government Northern Office.
This move is interpreted as a strategic step to promote various support projects for residents who have endured special sacrifices due to the division and to achieve balanced development across Gyeonggi Province, as advocated by Governor Lee Jae-myung.
On the 18th, Gyeonggi Province announced that the 'Railroad, Port, and Logistics Bureau,' which was previously located at the former Seed Management Office in southern Gyeonggi, was recently relocated to the Northern Office.
Accordingly, three divisions?Railroad Policy, Railroad Operations, and Railroad Construction?will be established within the Northern Office. However, the Logistics and Port Division, responsible for logistics and port policies, will remain at the Suwon Southern Office to ensure the smooth operation of the Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation.
With this, all SOC-related departments in transportation, construction, and railroads of Gyeonggi Province are now consolidated at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Northern Office.
Earlier, considering the increasing demand for railroad administration from residents in northern Gyeonggi, the province transferred the 'Railroad Bureau' from the First Administrative Deputy Governor to the Second Administrative Deputy Governor in charge of northern development through an organizational restructuring in October 2018.
In particular, since the 7th local government administration, the decision to relocate was made to expand railroad SOC in the northern region, which had been relatively underdeveloped compared to the southern region, and to position Gyeonggi Province as the starting point of the Northeast Asian railroad community in preparation for the era of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Currently, large-scale railroad construction projects such as the Byeollae Line (Seoul Amsa ~ Namyangju Byeollae, 12.8 km), Dobongsan ~ Okjeong Line (Seoul Dobongsan ~ Yangju Goeup, 15.3 km), and the Okjeong ~ Pocheon Line (Yangju Okjeong ~ Pocheon City, 17.5 km), which was confirmed as a preliminary feasibility exemption project under last year's National Balanced Development Project, are underway in northern Gyeonggi.
The province expects that the relocation of SOC-related departments to the north will create synergy among various projects and enable efficient promotion.
