Ministry of Environment-K-water Complete New Technology Water Purification Facility in Indonesia... "Solving Developing Countries' Water Issues"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The Ministry of Environment and Korea Water Resources Corporation announced on the 17th that they have completed a 'building-type (direct connection type) water purification facility' applying the latest village-level water purification technology at a dormitory school located in Banten Province, west of Jakarta, Indonesia.
The building-type water purification facility incorporates a new technology that arranges water purification processes such as membrane filtration for fine particle removal, oxidation treatment using ozone, and activated carbon adsorption in series, then processes the water by passing it all at once under pressure.
With the completion of the water purification facility, the school will be provided with 500㎥ of clean water per day through drinking fountains, sufficient for a total dormitory population of 6,500. Until now, students had been purchasing bottled water individually for drinking.
Overview of Indonesia's 'Building-type (Direct Connection) Water Purification Facility'
View original imageThis type of small-scale water purification facility is significant as a technological solution that can help address water issues in future cities and developing countries.
Unlike the conventional method of supplying water through water pipes from large-scale water purification plants on the outskirts of cities, this facility can supply water immediately after purification from water sourced near the city, solving problems such as distrust in tap water caused by aging water pipes.
Additionally, it can supply clean water to villages or independent facility units located separately on the outskirts without large-scale water infrastructure, making it an effective solution to water supply problems in developing countries.
The Ministry of Environment plans to develop various small-scale water purification facilities by integrating parts and technologies produced by domestic water industry companies and nurture these as representative overseas expansion projects.
K-water plans to build a building-type smart water purification plant applying direct connection type water purification technology within next year at the Busan Eco Delta Smart City, a national smart city pilot complex, and also promote overseas expansion.

Kim Dong-jin, Director of Water Resources Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Environment, said, "Village-level water purification plants will contribute to transforming the existing water supply system focused on water infrastructure, support the overseas expansion of the domestic water industry which has reached saturation, and furthermore serve as an effective means to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”
