International Basketball Federation Decides to Suspend All Tournaments Due to COVID-19 Spread
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has decided to suspend all tournament schedules due to concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
On the 12th, FIBA announced in a press release, "Considering the recent COVID-19 outbreak situation, we declare the suspension of all tournament schedules effective from the 13th to protect the health of players, coaches, officials, and fans."
FIBA, which oversees various international basketball competitions, had previously postponed the 3x3 basketball 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualifiers scheduled to be held in Bengaluru, India from the 18th to the 22nd. Additionally, the 3x3 basketball Asia Cup, originally planned for May in Changsha, China, was postponed to September, among other schedule adjustments. However, as concerns over the global spread of COVID-19 increased following the World Health Organization's (WHO) pandemic declaration, FIBA ultimately decided to suspend all events.
