The Mushroom Industry Research Institute challenged nine central government public projects in the first half of this year. Including the three newly selected projects this time, it achieved a total of four selected projects and 2.3 billion KRW in funding in the first half alone.
They plan to continuously discover and apply for various national research projects by the end of the year to establish new growth engines and future food sources for the local mushroom industry.
Among the three selected research projects, the "Development Project of Plant-based Table Sauce for Southeast Asian Export Strategy Using Fermented Log-grown Shiitake Extract (3 years, 660 million KRW)" aims to develop fermented processed products to enhance the added value of low-quality shiitake mushrooms caused by climate change and to pioneer overseas export markets.
The "Development Project of Eco-friendly Biodegradable Coating for Shiitake Mushroom Breeding and Quality Improvement (4 years, 900 million KRW)" will develop high-quality new varieties and establish an eco-friendly cultivation base in response to the large-scale import of Chinese moisturizing substrates.
The "Development Project of Wood Ear Mushroom Varieties Suitable for Domestic Environment and Establishment of Mass Production System (3 years, 660 million KRW)" is promoted to develop excellent domestic varieties and establish hygienic safety to replace the import of wood ear mushrooms, over 95% of which in domestic distribution are Chinese imports.
Kim An-gon, director of the Jangheung-gun Mushroom Industry Research Institute, said, "The price decline of domestic shiitake mushrooms and various adverse conditions are increasing the difficulties of cultivators," adding, "We will strive to improve the competitiveness of our county's mushroom industry and increase income for forest households by securing various national research projects while minimizing the county's financial burden."
