Honam University Nursing Department's Illustrated Book on Child Hygiene Management Gains Attention
'Beni-ui Bimil' Produced in 5 Languages... Used as a Global Textbook for 'COVID-19'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] As 'COVID-19' spreads worldwide, the nursing department (Department Head Yoo Hyesook) club 'ODAgada' students at Honam University have attracted attention with the picture book 'Beni's Secret,' which emphasizes the importance of personal hygiene such as handwashing in five languages.
According to Honam University on the 12th, as part of the 'Youth Global Citizenship Education Project' in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, the nursing students at Honam University created 'Beni's Secret,' which visually explains personal hygiene management through proper handwashing in an easy-to-understand way from a child's perspective.
This picture book was selected as a useful book for children's COVID-19 prevention and quarantine along with the spread of 'COVID-19' and was introduced in the Gwangsan-gu newsletter.
This project has been supported by Gwangsan-gu since 2016 through educational workshops, connections with writers of texts and picture books, and production of secondary works (second Korean translation). Nursing students, under the guidance of Professor Jang Yoonkyung, create health education picture books as a public-private collaborative project.
Together with 'Mr. Brush Brush,' which contains tips and the importance of brushing teeth, 'Beni's Secret' includes the basics of handwashing in six steps, such as washing palms, backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails. It is produced not only in Korean but also in English, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Spanish, and is used as educational material.
The club 'ODAgada' derives its name from ODA, which stands for Official Development Assistance, referring to aid aimed at economic development, social progress, and welfare improvement in developing countries. The club engages in activities related to international development, global health, and medical care, including making picture books, educational volunteering, and study sessions.
Through these activities, the goal is to expand the role of nurses beyond simply caring for patients, enabling them to work in broader domestic and international fields and become global nursing leaders prepared for globalization.
