Last Year, High School Students' Private Education Expenses 599,000 Won per Month... 50,000 Won Increase in One Year
Statistics Korea, '2019 Survey Results on Private Education Expenses for Elementary, Middle, and High School Students'
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] Last year, the average monthly cost of private education for high school students reached 600,000 KRW, showing an increase of more than 9% compared to the previous year.
On the 10th, Statistics Korea announced the results of the '2019 Survey on Private Education Expenses for Elementary, Middle, and High School Students' containing this information.
According to the survey, the average monthly private education expense per student for all elementary, middle, and high school students was 321,000 KRW, and for participating students, it was 429,000 KRW, which increased by 10.4% and 7.5% respectively compared to the previous year.
Based on all students, the expenses were ▲Elementary school 290,000 KRW (27,000 KRW, 10.3%↑) ▲Middle school 338,000 KRW (26,000 KRW, 8.4%↑) ▲High school 365,000 KRW (44,000 KRW, 13.6%↑). For participating students only, the amounts were ▲Elementary school 347,000 KRW (29,000 KRW, 9.1%↑) ▲Middle school 474,000 KRW (26,000 KRW, 5.8%↑) ▲High school 599,000 KRW (50,000 KRW, 9.1%↑).
Regarding private education expenses per student, based on all students, 3rd graders in elementary school spent 311,000 KRW, 3rd graders in middle school spent 352,000 KRW, and 1st graders in high school spent 376,000 KRW, which were the highest amounts in each category. For participating students, 6th graders in elementary school spent 394,000 KRW, 3rd graders in middle school spent 498,000 KRW, and 3rd graders in high school spent 629,000 KRW, which were the highest amounts respectively.
The proportion of students spending less than 300,000 KRW per month decreased compared to the previous year, while the proportion of students spending more than 300,000 KRW increased. In particular, the proportion of students spending more than 700,000 KRW rose to 12%, an increase of 2.2 percentage points from the previous year.
By subject, English had the highest average expense for participating students at 213,000 KRW, followed by Mathematics (191,000 KRW) and Social Studies & Science (108,000 KRW).

The higher the household's average monthly income level, the higher the private education expenses and participation rates. Private education expenses by household income bracket were 464,000 KRW for monthly incomes between 7 million and less than 8 million KRW, and 539,000 KRW for incomes above 8 million KRW, increasing by 9.7% and 6.6% respectively compared to the previous year. The participation rate in private education was highest at 87.0% for households with monthly incomes between 7 million and less than 8 million KRW, and lowest at 47.0% for those with less than 2 million KRW monthly income.
