[Yang Nakgyu's Defense video] The Quiet Inspiration of a COVID Support Nursing Officer
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] A video of a nursing officer performing duties in the COVID-19 isolation ward at Daegu Dongsan Medical Center is quietly touching hearts. This is due to the 'Band Spirit' shown by the bandage on the bridge of her nose, rubbed raw by the mask.
The 1 minute 51 second video posted on the Ministry of National Defense's official Facebook on the 5th shows Captain Kim Hye-ju, a nursing officer of the Army Specialist Officer 16th class from the Armed Forces Chuncheon Hospital, applying a bandage on the bridge of her nose. Wearing a mask daily while working caused chafing on her nose, and the bandage is to prevent wounds.
In the video, Captain Kim said, "At first, I didn't realize it and was just deployed, but the bridge of my nose got chafed and peeled, causing an external wound," adding, "Now, I put on a bandage to prevent (wound infection)." She also said, "I am very proud to be able to contribute as a member of the Armed Forces Medical Command," and "The most difficult part is wearing protective suits and nursing patients on the front lines, and above all, the tension comes from managing health for myself, the patients, and my medical colleagues."
Commissioned in 2014, Captain Kim completed her specialty in emergency nursing and served as an emergency nursing officer before recently being deployed to the COVID-19 field along with 20 military medical personnel. To ease her family's worries, she makes a phone call once a day after work to check in.
The video of Captain Kim showing her fighting spirit with a bandage on her nose surpassed 15,000 views within about 10 hours of being posted. Captain Kim calmly shared, "It was impressive to see civilians, government, and military working together in such harsh conditions to care for patients and do their best for patient recovery."
Meanwhile, 75 newly commissioned nursing officers from the 60th class of the Armed Forces Nursing Academy, who advanced their commissioning ceremony ahead of schedule and went down to Daegu on the 3rd, will be deployed to Daegu Armed Forces Hospital and other locations starting that day. These officers enrolled in 2016 and completed a four-year nursing cadet education program, and all passed the national nursing examination in February last year.
