[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] The Naju Education Promotion Foundation (Chairman Kang In-gyu) announced on the 27th that it will provide 153 million KRW in scholarships for the first half of the year to 79 outstanding new students from local high schools and universities.
The foundation used to hold an annual scholarship award ceremony to personally deliver scholarship certificates to the recipients, but this year, due to the spread of COVID-19, the ceremony was canceled and the certificates will be delivered directly to each school.
The high school outstanding new student scholarship is targeted at new students entering local high schools from graduating middle school students both inside and outside the region.
Based on middle school academic grades, 4 million KRW is awarded for grade 1 (within top 1%), 3.2 million KRW for grade 2 (within top 3%), 2.4 million KRW for grade 3 (within top 5%), 1.6 million KRW for grade 4 (within top 7%), and 800,000 KRW for grade 5 (within top 10%).
The university new student scholarship awards 2.5 million KRW each to new students entering Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University, medical fields, medical professional schools, law schools, KAIST, and Pohang University of Science and Technology.
Four new students recommended by Dongshin University located in the region, and students from child care facilities who enter university will each receive a scholarship of 1.2 million KRW.
Notably, this year, the number of students from child care facilities entering university increased from 2 last year to 6, demonstrating the effectiveness of the city’s universal educational welfare policy.
Mayor Kang In-gyu said, “We will continue to promote universal educational welfare policies, including scholarship payments, so that outstanding local talents with character and ability do not give up their studies due to economic conditions,” and added, “I hope they grow into excellent talents who meet the expectations and support of the local community.”

Meanwhile, the Naju Education Promotion Foundation plans to provide scholarships for outstanding new and current middle and high school students, as well as for arts, sports, and skills competitions in the second half of this year.
