Naver Webtoon 'Tower of God' Animation Simultaneously Airs in Korea, USA, and Japan
[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Naver Webtoon’s "Tower of God" will be simultaneously broadcast as an animation in Korea, the United States, and Japan on April 1.
On the 26th, Naver announced, "'Tower of God,' along with 'God of High School' and 'Noblesse' intellectual properties (IPs), will be sequentially animated and simultaneously aired in Korea, the United States, and Japan," adding, "This is the first case of domestic webtoon IPs being animated overseas with the participation of global animation companies. We expect Naver Webtoon's global recognition to expand further in the overseas entertainment industry."
The webtoon "Tower of God" by SIU began serialization on Naver Webtoon in 2010 and boasts a strong fan base overseas. It previously surpassed 4.5 billion cumulative views worldwide.
For this animation project, the well-known American animation company Crunchyroll participated as a major investor and distributor. Crunchyroll is a brand of WarnerMedia, a comprehensive media group in the United States, and is an animation-specialized streaming service with 60 million active users and over 2 million paid subscribers worldwide.
Naver sees Crunchyroll’s service, which covers the United States as well as Latin America and Europe, as a platform to expand the global reach of Naver Webtoon IPs.
Leading Japanese animation studios are also in charge of production. Telecom Animation Film is responsible for producing "Tower of God," MAPPA handles "God of High School," and Production I.G is producing "Noblesse." Naver explained that these studios "will express the original’s unique worldview and fresh characters at a high level based on their rich experience and technical skills."
Naver Webtoon expects that starting with the animation adaptations of "Tower of God," "God of High School," and "Noblesse," the video adaptations of webtoon IPs will actively progress not only domestically but also overseas.
