Severe Snowstorm Warning Issued for Seoul and Gyeonggi... "Feels Like -11°C Tomorrow"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] On the 16th, a heavy snow advisory was issued for some areas in the Seoul metropolitan area and the mountainous regions of Jeju Island.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) issued a heavy snow advisory at 11:30 AM on the 16th for Seoul, and Pyeongtaek, Anseong, and Hwaseong in Gyeonggi Province. Earlier, a heavy snow advisory was announced for the mountainous areas of Jeju Island at 6:30 AM.
A heavy snow advisory is issued when the snowfall accumulation over 24 hours is expected to be 5 cm or more. The KMA explained, "Snow is falling mainly in the central region and Jeolla Province. The snow in the Seoul metropolitan area will continue intermittently with varying intensity until 6 PM today as the westerly winds weaken. Some areas will see accumulations of about 1 to 3 cm. At night, as the westerly winds weaken, the snow will subside, but it will start snowing again between midnight and 9 AM on the 17th."
Looking at the snowfall accumulation at major points from 8 PM the previous day to 11:30 AM today: Baengnyeongdo 4.2 cm, Incheon 3.5 cm, Seoul 2.5 cm, Suwon 1.3 cm, Gimpo 2.1 cm, Ansan 0.7 cm, Gwacheon 0.6 cm, and others.
As cold air flows in, temperatures are expected to gradually drop. The KMA stated, "On the morning of the 17th, temperatures in most areas, including Seoul, will fall below freezing, with Seoul's morning temperature at minus 6 degrees Celsius. Strong winds will make the wind chill even colder, with an expected wind chill temperature of minus 11 degrees Celsius in Seoul. Roads may be slippery due to freezing of today's snow or rain, so please exercise extra caution for traffic safety."
