Gwangju City, Comprehensive Maintenance of 29 May 18 Historical Sites
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 13th that it will inspect the 5·18 historical sites ahead of the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
The targets are 29 5·18 historical sites throughout the city, focusing on inspecting the historical site markers, surrounding environment, and the old burial grounds where 5·18 merit recipients are interred. If any damaged facilities are found, repairs and maintenance will be completed by April.
The 5·18 historical sites include a total of 29 locations, such as the main gate of Chonnam National University, designated as the first site in 1998, and the old Jeonnam Provincial Office. The city is promoting preservation projects for sites whose original forms from 1980 have not been damaged.
In addition, Jeonil Building (No. 28) is currently in the final stages of restoration and remodeling work, and the old Jeonnam Provincial Office (No. 5) is undergoing restoration with a target completion year of 2022.
The former sites of the Gukgun Gwangju Hospital (No. 23), the 505 Security Unit (No. 26), and the late lawyer Hong Nam-sun’s house (No. 29) are currently not in use. They will undergo detailed safety inspections for preservation of their original forms, followed by design services necessary for restoration projects.
