WHO Secretary-General: "First COVID-19 Vaccine Secured Within 18 Months"
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), predicted that the first novel coronavirus vaccine could be secured within 18 months.
On the 11th (local time), he said, "It will take time to develop the (vaccine), but in the meantime, we are not defenseless."
He also pointed out, "If we invest reasonably and based on evidence now, we have a realistic chance to prevent the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, but if not, more (infection) cases will occur, and we may have to pay a greater cost."
Director-General Tedros also revealed that the official name of the novel coronavirus was designated as 'COVID-19.' 'CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for virus, 'D' for disease, and '19' refers to the year 2019 when the outbreak was first reported.

He added that a crisis management team within the United Nations (UN) has been activated to focus on health response, and Michael Ryan, head of the WHO Emergency Response Team, will lead it.
