Chonnam National University Hosts Seminar on 'Possibilities of Inter-Korean Agricultural Cooperation'
'How to Approach Inter-Korean Agricultural Cooperation' Topic
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chonnam National University held a seminar exploring the possibilities of inter-Korean agricultural cooperation amid changes in the Korean Peninsula situation.
According to Chonnam National University on the 5th, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (Dean An Giwan) and the Chonnam National University North Korean Agriculture Research Institute (Director Kang Hyejeong) held a seminar on the 3rd at Agricultural Life Sciences Building 2, titled "How to Achieve Inter-Korean Agricultural Cooperation."
The seminar was organized to consider the possibilities of inter-Korean agricultural cooperation in light of the changed situation on the Korean Peninsula following the breakdown of the Hanoi North Korea-U.S. summit last year.
Professor Kang Hyejeong presented under the theme "Current Status and Challenges of North Korean Agriculture," examining the state of North Korean agriculture and rural areas since Kim Jong-un's rise to power, related challenges, and the agricultural development cooperation model through the establishment of a "New Technology Complex Agricultural Complex" envisioned by the North Korean Agriculture Research Institute.
Kim Deoksu, representative of the (Corporation) Unification Agriculture and Fisheries, presented the theme "Current Status and Prospects of Inter-Korean Agricultural Cooperation," introducing cases of inter-Korean agricultural cooperation promoted by private NGOs and related organizations, and announced a second-phase strategy for inter-Korean agricultural cooperation aligned with the Moon Jae-in administration's Korean Peninsula initiative.
Dr. Moon Hanpil (Research Fellow at the Korea Rural Economic Institute) in the final section, under the theme "Current Status of Food Supply and Demand in South and North Korea and Agricultural Exchange and Cooperation Measures," selected inter-Korean trade target items based on comparative advantage using international organization statistics on North Korean agriculture, and proposed strategic agricultural cooperation areas that could benefit both South and North Korea.
Director Kang Hyejeong said, "We will continue to broaden understanding of North Korean agriculture through regular academic seminars and research effective measures for inter-Korean agricultural cooperation."

Meanwhile, the Chonnam National University North Korean Agriculture Research Institute was established in November 2017 to discover cooperative projects in the agriculture, forestry, and livestock sectors between South and North Korea, research effective agricultural cooperation promotion measures, and train specialized personnel in preparation for unification.
