Kim Bang-shin, Tata Daewoo CEO, "Entering the Compact Truck Market This Year... Breaking Hyundai's Monopoly"
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] "We plan to enter the compact truck market by the end of this year with a model that offers better performance and price competitiveness than our competitors. We will break the monopoly of competitors in this market and secure a 30% market share within the next five years."
Kim Bang-shin, CEO (President) of Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, announced this at a press conference held by the Korea Automobile Journalists Association on the 4th at Seolgawon in Gwanghwamun, Seoul. Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle (hereafter Tata Daewoo) is a domestic commercial vehicle brand specializing in medium and large trucks, selling a diverse lineup of commercial vehicles including medium and large trucks over 4.5 tons, cargo trucks, tractors, dump trucks, and mixers.
By the end of this year, Tata Daewoo plans to expand its lineup of compact trucks in the 3.5 to 4.5-ton class to leap forward as a comprehensive commercial vehicle manufacturer and target the compact truck market, which is virtually monopolized by Hyundai Motor Company. Generally, compact trucks refer to trucks in the 2.5 to 3.5-ton class, and Hyundai Commercial Vehicles holds more than 90% of this market share.
Accordingly, Tata Daewoo plans to broaden its target segment to the 3.5 to 4.5-ton class and expand its market share in the compact truck market, which is about 10,000 units annually. On this day, Tata Daewoo also presented a goal to capture 30% of the market share within five years.

As a latecomer, we must have clear advantages to dominate the market, so we will demonstrate distinct and definite strengths that differentiate us from competitors."
Regarding eco-friendly commercial vehicles, he also revealed plans to reorganize the lineup focusing on liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles rather than electric vehicles. He emphasized that large trucks with heavy loads require larger battery capacity and volume, making electric vehicles unsuitable for large trucks.
CEO Kim stated, "Currently, Tata Daewoo is the only company in Korea mass-producing and supplying LNG large trucks. While we are considering electric trucks, medium and large trucks have issues with battery weight, and ultimately, before moving to hydrogen vehicles, the intermediate stage of the LNG large truck market is valid."
CEO Kim is a former Hyundai Motor executive who served as Marketing Manager of Hyundai Motor's Eastern Europe Headquarters, Head of Marketing Strategy Team at Hyundai Motor Group, Head of Management Strategy at Kia Motors, and Head of Planning at Beijing Hyundai. Being well acquainted with competitors, he is regarded as the right person to effectively implement marketing strategies as a latecomer in the commercial vehicle market.
Since CEO Kim took office, Tata Daewoo announced the slogan "Life Truck, Moving with the Voice of Customers" last year, strengthening communication with customers and carrying out various management innovation activities. It operates over 70 service networks nationwide and opened a directly managed maintenance center in Busan last year. It also opened new maintenance factories in the Gyeongin and Busan/Gyeongsang regions, which have high air and port cargo volumes, to enhance service quality.

In addition, night reservation maintenance services started at 24 service networks nationwide, and free two-year maintenance for medium trucks and free regular inspection services for large trucks were implemented. This year, Tata Daewoo plans to continue improving after-sales service quality by adding service networks in the metropolitan area, Yeongnam, and Honam regions.
