[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The Democratic Party of Korea has reiterated that unnecessary anxiety should not be provoked through political disputes or 'fake news' related to the novel coronavirus infection.
Hong Ik-pyo, the Democratic Party's chief spokesperson, stated in a written briefing on the 1st, "The people are united in strength and solidarity to help prevent the spread of the infection. Now, the political circles and the National Assembly must respond with bipartisan cooperation."
He continued, "The health and safety of the people must not be held hostage to political disputes, nor should unnecessary anxiety be provoked by fake news. We urge the prompt convening of the February National Assembly, where both ruling and opposition parties have reached a consensus, to pass laws strengthening the quarantine system such as the Quarantine Act, and to hold high-level bipartisan consultations to ensure swift support for responding to the novel coronavirus infection."
Hong also said, "Many citizens are moved by the mature attitude of the residents of Asan and Jincheon who warmly welcomed the compatriots returning via chartered flights, and the Democratic Party of Korea bows in gratitude."
Regarding health authorities, he said, "We urge them to take a more proactive and preemptive approach to prevent the spread of the infection."

Hong emphasized, "Along with efforts to detect suspected patients early, the criteria for classifying and managing people who have come into contact with confirmed patients should be strengthened for active monitoring. In addition to actively promoting preventive measures, the response system must be reviewed and reinforced to ensure that those who have traveled to China within the past 14 days refrain from external activities and receive prompt testing if symptoms such as fever occur."
