The Only Nationwide Decrease in Vehicle Registrations
Rapid Surge in Eco-Friendly Vehicle Registrations
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] While the number of registered vehicles in Seoul decreased compared to the previous year, eco-friendly vehicles surged.
Seoul City announced on the 30th the statistical analysis results of the cumulative vehicle registration status as of the end of last year.
The cumulative number of registered vehicles in Seoul was 3,124,157, accounting for 13.19% of the national total.
Among all provinces and cities nationwide, Seoul was the only one to see a decrease in growth rate by 0.02% compared to the previous year. After continuous growth since 2012, this is the first decline, and the number of vehicles per capita dropped to the lowest nationwide. Simply put, there is one vehicle for every 3.1 Seoul citizens.
The district with the highest number of registered vehicles is Songpa-gu (240,559 vehicles), and the district with the highest vehicle registration per capita is Gangnam-gu, with one vehicle per 2.3 people.
By fuel type, gasoline vehicles accounted for the largest share at 51.47%, followed by diesel (35.91%), LPG (8.71%), hybrid (2.93%), and hydrogen/electric (0.49%). Among these, hybrid (91,505 vehicles), electric (14,952 vehicles), and hydrogen (595 vehicles) vehicles surged with year-on-year growth rates of 21%, 56%, and 613%, respectively.
By age group, registrations decreased in all age groups under 50, but continued to increase in those aged 60 and above.
By vehicle type, passenger cars accounted for over 80% with 2,670,803 vehicles, followed by freight vehicles (330,840), vans (114,310), and special vehicles (8,204).
