[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The conservative unified new party will be launched in mid-next month. Kim Hyung-o, the chairman of the Korea Party’s nomination committee, will serve as the nomination committee chairman of the unified new party. The plan is to focus on the election for the time being and hold the party convention after the election.
The Innovation and Integration Promotion Committee (Hyuktongwi), which is promoting centrist-conservative integration, held a meeting on the 22nd and announced that it decided on a preliminary roadmap for promoting integration.
According to the roadmap, Hyuktongwi will collect discussions and outcomes of integration with political parties and civic groups from the 23rd to the 30th, then review the outcomes and discuss integration-related matters from the 27th to the 30th. On the 31st, there will be a first public report on the results of the pan-centrist-conservative integration. From the 1st to the 3rd of next month, preparations will be made to form the unified new party founding preparation committee, launching the preparation committee in early next month, and the unified new party will be launched in mid-next month. Earlier, Hyuktongwi Chairman Park Hyung-joon also stated that the new party would be launched around the 15th of next month.
The unified new party’s convention will be held after the election. Chairman Park told reporters immediately after the meeting, “Even if the unified new party is formed, it is very difficult to hold an official party convention to form leadership before the election,” adding, “We decided to operate by distinguishing between before and after the election.” He added, “Until the election, the party will be run centered on the election countermeasures committee, and after the election, it would be better to officially revise the party constitution and regulations, hold the party convention based on that, form official leadership, and operate the party in a normal system.”

Chairman Park said, “It cannot be postponed until after the formation of the unified new party, and currently there is no major disagreement about Chairman Kim Hyung-o taking the nomination committee chairman position,” adding, “However, we agreed that under no circumstances should the nomination committee engage in factional nominations, and we hope the nomination committee will be formed with full authority.”
