Gyeonggi Urban公 Expands Modular Housing to 'Mid-High Rise'
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation is expanding the modular housing construction method from low-rise buildings of six floors or less to mid-rise buildings of six floors or more. The modular housing construction method involves building houses by assembling pre-fabricated modules.
Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation applied the low-rise modular method for the first time in Gyeonggi Province at the 'Seongnam Hadaewon Gyeonggi Happy Housing,' which was occupied last July, shortening the on-site construction period and receiving great response from local residents.
On the 20th, Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation announced that it signed a business agreement with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology to promote a demonstration project for mid-rise modular public housing.
This agreement aims to utilize the modular construction method reflecting the research results of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology's 'Development of Modular Building Mid-rise Construction and Productivity Improvement Technology' in the 'Yongin Yeongdeok Gyeonggi Happy Housing' project, to promote the first domestic demonstration project for constructing buildings of 13 floors or more.
According to the agreement, the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology will make efforts to secure government funding for the demonstration project, provide R&D development results and service support, and apply representative achievements to the demonstration project. Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation will reflect the research results in the demonstration project and perform overall tasks related to project planning, construction, housing supply, and rental management for public housing construction.
The 'Yongin Yeongdeok Gyeonggi Happy Housing project site' conducted by Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation was selected as the preferred negotiation site in September last year in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's competition for the 'Mid-rise Modular Public Housing Demonstration Complex Project Site.' Currently, domestic modular housing is only introduced in low-rise buildings of six floors or less due to technical limitations such as securing fire-resistant structural performance.
Lee Heon-wook, President of Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation, stated, "With the acquisition of technology through the mid-rise modular demonstration, we expect to shorten the on-site construction period, minimize damage to local residents caused by construction, and quickly supply rental housing to necessary areas." He emphasized, "We will do our best to realize universal housing welfare so that all Gyeonggi residents can live without worrying about housing."
