Mapo-gu 2020 Public Education Innovation... 'One Person One Instrument · Survival Swimming · Hangang Rowing Competition'
Goal to Enhance Character Education through Culture, Arts, and Physical Education: Instrument Purchase Costs, School Orchestra Operation, Strengthened School-Music Group Matching Education...Significant Expansion of Support for Survival Swimming and Han River Rowing Experience Education Participants
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) will invest a total of 4.5 billion KRW in educational expense subsidies for kindergartens and elementary, middle, and high schools throughout this year to promote differentiated and competitive public education support projects.
The 2020 educational expense subsidy support projects of the district are broadly divided into district policy projects and school public contest projects. Policy projects aimed at creating an educational environment, fostering future talents, strengthening character education, and enhancing public education competitiveness are the core of Mapo-gu's education specialization projects.
In particular, the district is implementing distinctive support projects aimed at strengthening character education through culture, arts, and physical education, and plans to strengthen support by investing a total budget of 825 million KRW in projects such as one person one instrument, survival swimming, and Han River rowing experience projects.
The one person one instrument project includes support for purchasing instruments for regular curriculum, support for school orchestras, and a one school one music group matching project (pilot project), with a total budget of 600 million KRW allocated.
Support for instrument purchase costs is for instrument classes organized as part of the regular curriculum and provides 5 million KRW per school for all elementary and middle schools in Mapo-gu. This support is expected to significantly reduce the burden of supplies on parents.
The orchestra support project provides support for 15 orchestras operating in local elementary and middle schools by covering instructor fees, performance fees, instrument purchase costs, and repair costs, with support ranging from 10 million KRW to a maximum of 40 million KRW per school.
The one school one music group project, promoted as a pilot project, is a program where schools and music groups sign agreements, and music group members directly teach instruments to third-grade elementary students. From the following year, music instruction continues for students who wish to participate through after-school and club activities. The district plans to support necessary soundproofing facilities, instructor fees, instrument purchase costs, and repair costs up to 100 million KRW per school.
The survival swimming education project reflects the recent inclusion of survival swimming in the regular curriculum for third and fourth graders in elementary schools and is operated for fifth and sixth graders and middle school students who are outside this curriculum. The target audience has been expanded from middle school students to include elementary students. The program teaches time-based coping methods, self-rescue techniques, and survival swimming methods using flotation devices necessary in emergency situations.
Also, the Han River rowing experience project, first introduced by Mapo-gu in 2017 as the first in Seoul, is a differentiated educational program unique to Mapo-gu that particularly develops students' cooperation and consideration. This year, the target audience will be greatly expanded from only first-year middle school students to all middle school students and interested high school students, and the operating hours will be extended to enhance the program's substance.
