Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "Possibility of Localized Additional Provocations and Accidental Clashes Remains"... Middle East Situation Task Force Meeting
Korea-Iran Economic Issues Related Inter-Ministerial Meeting to Be Held on the 17th
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 13th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a Middle East Situation Task Force meeting chaired by First Vice Minister Cho Se-young to review the government's response system regarding changes in the situation following Iran's missile attack on U.S. and coalition forces' bases in Iraq and the acknowledgment of the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently maintaining a 24-hour emergency response system centered on the Middle East Situation Task Force and the Overseas Safety Protection Center, operating in close cooperation with overseas diplomatic missions and related ministries. The task force is composed of the First Vice Minister as the head, the Economic Diplomacy Coordinator (deputy head), Director of the Asia-Middle East Bureau, Director of the North America Bureau, Overseas Safety Management Planner, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Diplomacy Planner, Director of the Bilateral Economic Bureau, and the Deputy Spokesperson.
Following U.S. President Donald Trump's national address, the task force decided to continuously review measures to ensure the safety of overseas nationals and companies, as the possibility of localized additional provocations such as terrorist attacks by proxy forces in the Middle East and cyberattacks, as well as accidental clashes, still remain.
Additionally, the task force analyzed the overall impact of the U.S. announcement on additional sanctions against Iran on the 11th and Iran's admission of mistakenly shooting down a Ukrainian civilian aircraft on the Middle East situation and our economy, and discussed related countermeasures. A related ministries' meeting on Korea-Iran economic issues is scheduled for the 17th.
