KISA Opens Subway Location Data for Emergency Rescue Use
"New Opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises and Startups"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced on the 13th that it has opened location information data (Wi-Fi AP information), which was mainly used for emergency rescue, and distributed a usage guide.
Location information is increasingly utilized in various fields such as disaster prevention, emergency rescue, and public safety. However, due to the cost of building the infrastructure necessary for utilizing location information, small and medium-sized enterprises have struggled to enter the location-based service sector.
Accordingly, KISA, together with the Korea Communications Commission, opened the location information data built over four years from 2014 for emergency rescue support purposes, so that private companies such as location information startups can use it. The data consists of Wi-Fi AP information collected from 890 subway stations nationwide, enabling indoor location identification within subway stations through approximately 220,000 APs.
