[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Arario Gallery will hold the first exhibition of 2020, a solo exhibition titled "We, Each Our Own Story" by Chinese artist Chen Weijun (44).
The exhibition will be held at Arario Gallery Seoul, located on Bukchon-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, from the 9th of this month until the 22nd of next month.
Chen Weijun is an artist who has been consistently recognized in the contemporary Chinese art scene for portraying the rapidly changing Chinese society through stories of everyday life.
This exhibition will showcase about 30 new works by Chen Weijun. Starting from the most personal experiences of the artist, he unravels how individual stories that make up society come together to form a community. Through this approach, he expresses his critical perspective and reflection on the identity of individuals and communities that have undergone modernization and Westernization in Asian countries.
One of the main works, "Space of 11 Square Meters," employs the artist’s collage technique across a 5-meter-long canvas. It combines collage techniques using torn newspaper and traditional Korean paper (hanji) with painting techniques using ink and acrylic.
Chen Weijun was born in 1976 in Fujian Province, China, and currently works in Shanghai. He graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China. Using various media such as painting, collage, drawing, and sculpture, he freely expresses stories of Chinese society and his personal narratives. He has held solo exhibitions at the Asia Art Center in Taiwan (2018) and the 9m2 Museum in Shanghai (2015), and is scheduled to hold a large-scale solo exhibition at the Long Museum in Shanghai in 2021. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale (2014), Beijing Minsheng Art Museum (2015), Shanghai Long Museum (2014), and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (2013).
