Guro-gu, Special Latent Tuberculosis Screening for Childcare Workers and Others
Establishing the First Nationwide Basis for Free Screening through Amendment of the 'Infectious Disease Prevention and Management Ordinance' for Facility Workers Including Postpartum Care Centers, Daycare Centers, Kindergartens, and Senior Care Integrated Centers
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) is conducting a special screening for latent tuberculosis.
Guro-gu announced on the 2nd that latent tuberculosis is a disease that can be prevented 60-90% if detected and treated early, and plans to reduce the incidence rate by promoting a 'special screening for latent tuberculosis' targeting children, the elderly, and facility workers who frequently come into contact with these tuberculosis-vulnerable groups.
Latent tuberculosis refers to a state where a person is infected with tuberculosis bacteria but shows no symptoms. Among 10% of infected individuals, half develop tuberculosis within 2 years, and the rest develop it later.
As of 2017, South Korea has the highest incidence and mortality rates among OECD member countries, with 70 cases and 5 deaths per 100,000 people, respectively.
Accordingly, Guro-gu established the basis for supporting latent tuberculosis screening costs for the first time among local governments nationwide by revising the 'Infectious Disease Prevention and Management Ordinance.' According to the ordinance, free screening can be conducted for workers at facilities subject to tuberculosis screening under the 'Tuberculosis Prevention Act.'
Following the ordinance revision, starting this year, Guro-gu will provide free screening not only for legally mandated screening facilities such as postpartum care centers, daycare centers, and kindergartens but also for non-target facilities including mental health welfare centers, psychiatric rehabilitation facilities, integrated elderly care centers, and community visiting nurses.
Last month, a demand survey for screening was completed targeting facility workers. After selecting a commissioned screening institution earlier this month, blood tests (IGRA - Interferon-Gamma Release Assay) will be conducted from the 13th to February 28th, and results will be notified.
Subsequently, support will be provided for the final diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection and treatment for infected individuals.
A Guro-gu official stated, "Through this screening, we will maintain a thorough disease prevention and management system," and added, "We will continue to make our best efforts to create an environment where all residents can live healthily."
