Lee Jae-yong's First Management Move of the New Year is the 'Semiconductor Research Institute'... Checking the Development of '3nm Semiconductor'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited the Semiconductor Research Center located at the Hwaseong Plant in Gyeonggi Province on the 2nd as his first schedule of the new year.
On that day, Vice Chairman Lee received a briefing on Samsung Electronics' world-first developed 3-nanometer process technology at the Semiconductor Research Center and discussed next-generation semiconductor strategies with the DS (Device Solutions) division executives.
Lee's decision to start his first management activity of the new year at the semiconductor development site is interpreted as a way to share once again with employees the vision of becoming number one in the world not only in memory but also in the system semiconductor field, and to strengthen the determination to achieve this goal.
At the site, Lee said, "Past achievements do not guarantee future success," and added, "History is not something to wait for but something to create. Let us boldly discard wrong practices and thinking and pioneer a new future."
He continued, "Let us remember that sharing with our neighbors and society and growing together is our mission and the path to becoming a 100-year company."
The 3-nanometer semiconductor applying the next-generation technology 'GAA (Gate-All-Around)', which can overcome the limits of semiconductor miniaturization, can reduce chip area by more than 35% compared to the recently completed 5-nanometer product, reduce power consumption by 50%, and improve performance (processing speed) by about 30%, according to the company.
In particular, this technology competes with Taiwan's TSMC, the global number one foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) company, and is considered a core technology for realizing Samsung Electronics' 'Semiconductor Vision 2030' announced last year.
