BMW Leads Electric Vehicle Popularization... Receives 2,125 Chargers and Adds 600 More

Editor's NoteThe '2025 Green Mobility Award,' hosted by Asia Economy and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Environment, and the Korea Automobile Mobility Industry Association, is an event designed to encourage the development of cutting-edge eco-friendly technologies and evaluate their achievements, reflecting the era of electrification. Although concerns about a 'chasm'?a temporary stagnation in demand?are growing amid the popularization of electric vehicles, electrification remains valid as a future-oriented trend. Mobility companies, including automakers, are fiercely competing to secure leadership in future technologies. Over the past year, we have selected and awarded individuals and companies who have made outstanding achievements in the research and development of eco-friendly mobility solutions.

BMW Korea will take the lead in popularizing electric vehicles by installing an additional 600 or so EV chargers within this year.

The 'Charging Next' project by BMW Korea is an EV charging infrastructure initiative that has been underway since 2023 to address the growing demand for charging in line with the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle market. All EV chargers installed through this project are open to the public, allowing any EV owner to conveniently charge their vehicle.

BMW Korea has also introduced the 'BMW Charging Hub Lounge,' a lounge-type rapid charging station that adds a relaxation space to the EV charging process, as well as the 'Plug and Charge (PnC)' service, which simplifies the EV charging procedure. Through these efforts, the company has not only expanded the quantity of charging infrastructure but also enhanced its quality.

BMW Korea's efforts to build EV charging infrastructure began in 2014. With the launch of the BMW i3, the company installed more than 200 EV chargers nationwide, including at official BMW showrooms and service centers, as well as 80 E-Mart locations across the country.

In 2021, the cumulative number of installed EV chargers surpassed 500, and in 2023, it exceeded 1,000. Last year alone, more than 1,000 chargers were installed, resulting in a total of 2,125 EV charging stations established to date.

In particular, BMW Korea is leading the era of EV popularization by installing chargers nationwide. In addition to the 660 chargers installed in the Seoul and Gyeonggi metropolitan area, the company has also built charging infrastructure in regions such as Gangwon, Jeolla, and Ulsan, making it convenient for all EV drivers to access charging facilities. In Jeju Island, where the proportion of EVs is high, and in the major city of Busan, a popular tourist destination, more than 100 EV chargers have been installed in each location, helping to meet the growing demand for EV charging.

BMW Korea has also shown interest not only in the distribution of eco-friendly pure electric vehicles but also in EV battery recycling. In 2019, the company established the 'e-Gopang Charging Station' in Jeju Island, the first in Korea to combine reused EV batteries with renewable energy generation.

BMW Korea stated, "This year, we plan to add a total of 600 more EV chargers, including a new concept ESG charging station," and added, "We also plan to gradually expand the PnC service, which is currently the only one provided among imported car brands."
