Ruling Party Completes By-Election Nominations in Gyeonggi and Incheon... Finalization by Early May at the Latest
Ha Jungwoo and Jeon Eunsu to Be Recruited and Announced on April 29
The Democratic Party has finalized its nominations for the Seoul metropolitan area by-elections, which will be held alongside the June 3 nationwide local elections. This week, the party plans to accelerate the nomination process by adding additional candidates such as Ha Jungwoo, Chief of AI Future Planning at the Presidential Office, and former spokesperson Jeon Eunsu. As a result, the Democratic Party is expected to complete its candidate lineup ahead of the opposition People Power Party.
On April 29, the Democratic Party plans to announce its nominations for Chief Ha (Busan Buk-gap) and former spokesperson Jeon (Cheonan Asan-eul). Once these regions are finalized, the party will have effectively confirmed candidates for 8 out of the 14 by-election districts, which is more than half. As of the previous day, the party had completed nominations in Incheon ▲Gyeyang-eul (Kim Namjun) ▲Yeonsu-gap (Song Younggil), Gyeonggi ▲Hanam-gap (Lee Kwangjae) ▲Ansan-gap (Kim Namguk) ▲Pyeongtaek-eul (Kim Yongnam). Jeon Taejin, the first designated recruited talent for the local elections, was nominated for Ulsan Nam-gap.

For Dalseong in Daegu, the party is reviewing either former lawmaker Hong Uirak or Park Hyungnyong, the local party chair. The nominations for Gongju·Buyeo·Cheongyang in South Chungcheong Province are still under consideration. In order to review the candidacy of Park Junghyun, former head of Buyeo County, the Democratic Party's legal department has asked the National Election Commission for an authoritative interpretation, requesting that “since it is difficult to predict whether a by-election will be held, please allow nominations even if the 'resignation 120 days prior' rule is not met.”
