- Supporting 1 Billion Won Over 5 Years Under the Vision of "Minimizing Suffering for the Greatest Number"… Assistance Across Five Key Areas, Including Health and Education
The Midas Happiness Foundation announced on April 20 that it had signed a business agreement with the international relief and development NGO World Vision at the Midas Group headquarters in Pangyo, Seongnam, to establish ‘Midas Village’, a sustainable self-reliance project in Tapin Village, Thua Chua District, Vietnam.
Under this agreement, the Midas Happiness Foundation will provide support of 200 million won each year for the next five years, totaling 1 billion won, to Tapin Village. This agreement goes beyond simple aid, focusing on establishing a 'true self-reliance' model that empowers the entire village to stand on its own. The sponsorship funds will be used in five key areas: ▲water supply & sanitation ▲health & nutrition ▲education ▲income generation ▲disaster preparedness. The foundation plans to gradually expand the scope of support in stages according to this order.
The beneficiary region, Tapin Village, is home to 172 households and 992 people. Its multidimensional poverty rate stands at 40.7%, about five times higher than the national average in Vietnam, making it an extremely impoverished area. The village lacks any water purification systems, and the rate of stunted growth among children under five is 35%. Due to the absence of basic survival infrastructure, residents face severe threats to their survival.
The Midas Happiness Foundation selected Tapin Village as the recipient based on its philosophy of 'minimizing suffering for the greatest number.' Adhering to the principle of delivering tangible help to those in the most desperate need with limited resources, the foundation prioritized regions with the highest poverty rates and most severe lack of survival infrastructure.
Through this agreement, the Midas Happiness Foundation has become the first partner in World Vision’s history to exclusively support the self-reliance of a single village. By focusing on one region for five years to complete the foundation for self-sufficiency, this initiative stands apart from one-off charitable donations, representing a new model of social contribution. In addition to material support, the Midas Happiness Foundation will establish a sisterhood relationship with Tapin Village, facilitating annual visits from employees of Midas IT, Midasin, and Jain Research Institute—affiliates of Midas Group—to participate in volunteer work and interact with residents.
Since its establishment in 2015, the Midas Happiness Foundation has undertaken a variety of social contribution activities. To reduce life-threatening hardships, it has donated over 4.6 billion won, including ▲medical expense support at Bundang Jesaeng General Hospital ▲medical support for disadvantaged groups ▲provision of therapeutic foods for malnutrition through Doctors Without Borders.
Members of the Midas Group have also actively taken part in everyday giving. Their domestic social contribution activities have included ▲lunchbox deliveries for marginalized seniors in Seongnam ▲production of braille books for the visually impaired. Internationally, they have implemented ▲well-digging projects in developing countries ▲library construction in Tanzania. The Midas Village project builds on these efforts, expanding the scope of their social contribution through comprehensive and long-term support for the self-reliance of a single community.
Lee Hyungwoo, Chairman of the Midas Happiness Foundation, stated, "Our abilities are not a privilege, but a special benefit granted by the world; therefore, the benefits we receive from the world must be returned to it." He continued, "Giving is both an act of love toward society and a responsibility and duty entrusted to entrepreneurs." He added, "We will continue this commitment to giving and fully carry out our social responsibilities alongside World Vision until Tapin Village achieves genuine self-reliance."
