Jeonju District Court Sentences Owner to One Year in Prison
The owner of a supermarket who embezzled hundreds of millions of won in sales proceeds from a butcher shop located inside the store has been sentenced to prison.
According to Yonhap News on May 21, the Jeonju District Court’s 4th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Moon Juhee) sentenced a 49-year-old individual, referred to as Mr. A, to one year in prison on charges of occupational embezzlement.
Mr. A was put on trial for siphoning off approximately 290 million won in sales proceeds from the butcher shop that had been operating inside his supermarket from April 2022 to January 2024. The crime was possible because, rather than at the butcher shop itself, payments for meat were processed collectively at the supermarket’s checkout counter.
Mr. A had allowed Mr. B to open a butcher shop in the supermarket in January 2022, charging a deposit of 200 million won and a monthly rent of 5 million won. The agreement stipulated that, after deducting a 1.5% card processing fee, a 3.3% points fee, meal charges, and leaflet expenses, the remaining sales proceeds would be settled every ten days. However, Mr. A soon realized that Mr. B was unable to accurately track his earnings. Afterwards, over the course of 17 occasions, Mr. A diverted amounts ranging from several million to tens of millions of won in meat sales proceeds each time. It was found that Mr. A used the embezzled funds to pay for goods from suppliers, employee salaries, and personal loan interest.
When brought to court for these actions, Mr. A returned 128 million won to Mr. B, seeking leniency from the court.

The court stated, "Considering the duration and amount of the embezzlement, the defendant's culpability is very serious," and added, "It appears that the victims suffered significant psychological and financial distress due to the defendant's actions, making a prison sentence unavoidable." However, the court also noted, "Since the defendant has admitted to the crime, he will not be taken into custody in court to allow him the opportunity to further compensate the victim during the appeals process."
