What Happened in the Maldives, a Top Resort Destination... Five Tourists Dead
Italian Divers Embark on Underwater Cave Exploration
Scuba Diving at 50 Meters Depth Amid Severe Weather Conditions
Five Italians have died in the Maldives, a world-renowned resort destination in the Indian Ocean. The group reportedly encountered tragedy while scuba diving in a deep underwater cave.
According to the BBC and AFP on the 15th (local time), the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the previous day that "five Italians died in an accident while scuba diving in the Maldives, and one body has been recovered so far."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the accident occurred at Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives, and the divers are believed to have died while attempting to explore an underwater cave about 50 meters deep. The site of the accident is located approximately 100 kilometers south of the capital, Malé.
Among the deceased were a professor from the Department of Marine Biology at the University of Genoa, his daughter, and two researchers. On the morning of the incident, they traveled to the site by yacht to explore the underwater cave. When they failed to resurface past their scheduled time, the yacht crew reported them missing. In response, Maldivian authorities deployed aircraft and high-speed boats for the search operation. Authorities found one body inside the cave and said the remaining four are also believed to be in the same cave.
The exact cause of death has not yet been determined, but at the time of the accident, strong winds of up to 30 miles per hour (about 48 kilometers per hour) were reported in the area, resulting in poor weather conditions. Due to this, a yellow warning was issued for passenger and fishing vessels in the area.
