Gyeongnam Election Commission Reports Prospective Candidate to Prosecution for Allegedly Paying Class Fees on Behalf of Others
The Gyeongnam Election Commission announced on May 14 that it had reported a prospective candidate to the prosecution for allegedly paying class fees on behalf of others in connection with the 9th Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections.
According to the Gyeongnam Election Commission, prospective candidate A is suspected of having paid the regional culture class fees for three local residents who were enrolled in the course around mid-September last year.
The Public Official Election Act stipulates that anyone seeking candidacy is prohibited from making donations to individuals, organizations, groups, or facilities within their electoral district.
Violations of this law are punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.

An official from the Gyeongnam Election Commission stated, "Attempts to sway public sentiment with money or valuables constitute a serious crime that undermines the values of democracy," and added, "We will mobilize all available enforcement resources to eradicate illegal election practices such as donations."
