Democratic Party Maintains Lead at 45% vs. People Power Party at 23%
President Lee’s Job Approval at 61%, Down 3 Percentage Points
As the June 3 local elections approach, public sentiment in favor of checking the current administration has increased. President Lee Jaemyung's approval rating declined slightly, recording just above 60%.
According to a public opinion poll released on the 15th by Korea Gallup (conducted from May 12 to 14 among 1,011 respondents aged 18 and older nationwide, using wireless phone interviews; margin of error is ±3.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level, with a response rate of 12.5%), 44% of respondents said that more candidates from the ruling party should be elected in this local election, while 33% said that more opposition party candidates should win. Compared to the previous survey conducted two weeks ago, support for a ruling party victory decreased by 2 percentage points, while support for an opposition party victory increased by 3 percentage points.
The approval rating for the Democratic Party of Korea was 45%, down 1 percentage point from the previous survey, while the People Power Party was at 23%, up 2 percentage points. The Reform New Party was at 3%, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party at 2%, and the Progressive Party at 1%.
The President's job performance approval rating was 61%, down 3 percentage points from the previous survey. The negative evaluation rose by 2 percentage points to 28%. Regarding the Democratic Party of Korea's plan to grant the power to cancel indictments to the special prosecutor investigating alleged manipulation in the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's investigations and prosecutions, only 27% of respondents were in favor and 44% were opposed. Meanwhile, on the first day of candidate registration for the June 3 local elections and the National Assembly by-elections, 6,902 people completed their registration. As of now, 49 candidates have registered for the 16 metropolitan mayor and governor positions. Candidate registration is open until 6 p.m. on this day.
