Do You Know "Busan-Style Alley Support"? Busan City to Foster Alley Commercial Districts
Jangnim Industrial Supplies Street and 40 Steps Road Selected
Five New Alley Districts to Receive Growth Support
The city of Busan is launching a project to revitalize local alley commercial districts and strengthen their self-sufficiency.
On May 12, Busan City announced that it had finalized the locations for the "2026 Alley Commercial District Revitalization Support Project."
Now in its fifth year, this initiative aims to support the specialization of alley commercial districts by integrating local resources and culture.
This year, five new alley commercial district communities have been selected: Gyeongseonggak Merchants Association in Nam-gu, Nampo-dong Old Alley in Jung-gu, Dalbit Godong-gil in Nam-gu, Jeonggwan Dolphin Street in Gijang-gun, and Deokcheon Youth Street in Buk-gu. Each of these districts will receive a growth support grant of 25 million won.
Busan City selected the recipients through an open call in April, followed by document and presentation evaluations. This year, in collaboration with the Southeast Regional Data Office, evaluation data included sales volume, business opening and closure status, and floating population figures.
The newly selected alley commercial districts will also benefit from the "Alley Commercial District Community Organization Support Project," which provides assistance such as merchant capacity building, brand strategy development, joint marketing, and environmental improvements.
Among the existing alley commercial districts, Jangnim Industrial Supplies Street in Saha-gu and 40 Steps Road in Jung-gu have been designated as "Busan-Style Alley Support" exemplary alleys.
Each of these two districts will receive a 100 million won grant for commercial district revitalization. Busan City plans to nurture these areas as representative alley commercial districts of the city.
Jangnim Industrial Supplies Street is a commercial district closely linked to the Jangnim and Sinpyeong industrial complexes. Last year, projects included the establishment of a smart shared logistics system and the development of an AI chatbot. This year, plans include implementing a smart joint delivery system, improving alley space design, and providing educational programs for the merchants' association.
40 Steps Road is an alley commercial district that embodies the history and culture of Busan's original downtown. Busan City will work to create a stay-type commercial district by linking historical, cultural, and culinary resources. Joint marketing initiatives such as stamp tours, pop-up stores, and SNS promotions are also planned.
In addition, Busan City will operate on-site "Commercial District Planners" for alley commercial district communities to provide consulting and support organization building efforts.
