Notably, this competition applies the city's own "Improvement Plan for Public Building Design Competitions," prioritizing transparency and fairness throughout the evaluation process.
The competition will follow a "simplified design competition" method, which greatly streamlines the required documentation in accordance with the guidelines for architectural design competitions. This approach aims to reduce the burden on designers and encourage a wide range of creative ideas.
To ensure objective and fair evaluation, the city has formed an operations committee that predetermined the judging method and the number of judges for this competition. The operations committee, composed of seven members, held two meetings in April to discuss the direction of the competition. As a result, the judging panel will consist of 14 experts in architecture and design—11 main judges and 3 preliminary judges. Blind presentations and a two-stage judging system will be implemented to enhance fairness in the evaluation process.
The project site is located in the central area of Yongin Jungang Market and along the Geongan Stream, specifically at 133-186 Gimnyangjang-dong, Cheoin-gu. The project aims to increase convenience for both market visitors and merchants, including those using the Byeolbitmadang Night Market and the five-day market. The "Yongin Jungang Market Complex Convenience Facility Construction Project" is targeted for completion in April 2028.
From the planning stage, the city has incorporated feedback from consultations with the Jungang Market Merchants Association, which includes the reconstruction of the existing outdated public restrooms and the establishment of a shared waste collection facility for efficient disposal of market-generated waste. In addition, the project will include amenities such as nursing rooms, customer lounges, and multipurpose rooms to improve both the market environment and the urban landscape.
The competition schedule is as follows: participant registration on May 13, design submission on June 5, evaluation on June 19 and 22, and the announcement of the final winner on June 23. The winner will be awarded the design contract, and other finalists will receive compensation according to their ranking.
