"Barrier Wouldn't Open"... Man in His 50s Sentenced to Prison for Brutally Assaulting Security Guard in His 70s
Enraged by the Security Guard's Call to Police, Assault Escalated
Kicked the Responding Officer's Legs and Knees During Rampage
A man in his 50s has been sentenced to prison after brutally assaulting a security guard in his 70s because a barrier gate at an apartment complex would not open, and then attacking a responding police officer during his rampage.
On May 8, Judge Kim Cheonsu of the Criminal Division 5 at the Seoul Northern District Court announced that he had sentenced Mr. A (55), who was indicted on charges of causing injury and obstructing the performance of official duties, to one year and four months in prison.
Mr. A was brought to trial for assaulting and injuring the security guard and then attacking the police officer who responded to the report after the incident, which occurred in July of last year at an apartment complex in Jungnang-gu, Seoul. The violence reportedly began when the barrier gate at the vehicle entrance failed to open.
According to the investigation, at around 9 p.m. on the day of the incident, Mr. A tried to drive into the apartment complex through the rear gate, but when the barrier gate did not open, he approached the security office and grabbed the 70-something security guard, Mr. B, by the collar. Although a resident intervened and Mr. A returned to his car, Mr. B then checked the vehicle's license plate and told Mr. A, "I've called the police, please wait." At this, Mr. A pushed Mr. B to the ground and repeatedly struck his face.
In particular, Mr. A reportedly climbed on top of Mr. B, who had already fallen to the ground, and continued to punch him mercilessly, even spitting in his face during the assault. Mr. A then kicked the legs and knees of the police officer who responded to the scene several times. As a result of the assault, Mr. B suffered a concussion and injuries to his head and shoulder, including a torn rotator cuff muscle and tendon in his shoulder, which required four weeks of recovery.

Judge Kim stated, "The victim and his family are pleading for a severe punishment, and although the defendant deposited 10 million won with the court as a criminal bond, the victim has made it clear that he does not wish to accept the money." However, the judge added, "The defendant does not have a prior record of violent crimes, nor does he appear to have a tendency toward repeated violent behavior."
