First Korean Oil Tanker Arrives in Yeosu After Taking Red Sea Detour Around Hormuz Blockade
Carrying About 2 Million Barrels of Crude Oil to Yeosu
Amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the aftermath of the Middle East war, the first Korean oil tanker to take the alternative route through the Red Sea arrived in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, on May 7, 2026.
According to industry sources, a Korean oil tanker carrying about 2 million barrels of crude oil from Yanbu Port in Saudi Arabia, which passed through the Red Sea in mid-April, entered the GS Caltex crude oil terminal in Yeosu on this day.
This oil tanker is the first case of a Korean vessel transporting crude oil to Korea via the Red Sea following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Since then, including this month, two oil tankers have passed through the Red Sea, with such crude oil shipments through this route occurring in succession.
