Trump Stresses "Cherished U.S.-UK Bond"... Unofficial Diplomatic Impact of King Charles III
Trump Focuses on U.S.-UK Ties
NYT: "King's Visit Is Unofficial Diplomacy"
U.S. President Donald Trump, who had previously expressed open dissatisfaction with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasized the close ties between the United States and the United Kingdom during the state welcome ceremony for King Charles III, who is on a state visit to the U.S. on April 28 (local time).
In his welcoming remarks at the White House that day, President Trump said, "King Charles III's intellect, passion, and dedication have been a blessing not only to the United Kingdom, but also to the precious bond between the United States and the UK," adding, "I am confident that this relationship will continue for a long time to come."
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, following its independence from the United Kingdom. President Trump highlighted the historical relationship between the two countries, emphasizing that the roots of American ancestors originated in Britain.
He stated, "Even before we declared independence, Americans held within us the most precious gift: moral courage — and that came from a small but great kingdom across the sea."
He went on to say, "For centuries after we achieved independence, there has been no closer friend to Americans than the British. We share the same roots, speak the same language, and aspire to the same values."
President Trump also mentioned that a bust of former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill is displayed in the Oval Office at the White House. Winston Churchill symbolizes the joint front formed by the United States and the United Kingdom against Nazi Germany during World War II. This relationship continued after the war, laying the foundation for the U.S.-UK strategic alliance.
After King Charles III and his wife departed, President Trump told reporters, "It was a truly wonderful meeting. The King is a remarkable person, and both of them are amazing people. It was an honor to meet them."
President Trump had previously openly criticized the UK for not providing military support in operations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war. Tensions between the two countries peaked when Prime Minister Starmer refused to allow the use of UK bases.
