Dong-A University (President Lee Hae-woo) announced on the 28th that its School of Law (Dean Song Si-seop) had hosted a colloquium by inviting Katsuya Uga, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo.
This colloquium was organized to enhance the understanding of the roles and functions of the highest courts in both Korea and Japan by comparing the structure and operational characteristics of the Supreme Court of Japan with the Korean judicial system, as well as to foster the ability to view judicial systems from an international perspective.
The event, held on the 27th in a third-floor lecture hall at Dong-A University’s Bumin Campus School of Law, drew significant attention, with more than 70 participants including Dean Song Si-seop, Distinguished Professor Kim Shin, Professor Choi Woo-yong, Professor Heo Hwang from the Department of Police Science, as well as law school students, faculty, and undergraduates.
In his keynote lecture, Professor Emeritus Katsuya Uga—an authority in the field of administrative law and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan—was recognized as a scholar with both research and practical experience in the Japanese judicial system.
During his lecture, Professor Uga provided an in-depth explanation of the trial structure and judicial system of the Supreme Court of Japan, the process of precedent formation, and key challenges facing the highest court, highlighting the features and operational methods of Japan’s judicial system.
Kim Shin, Distinguished Professor at Dong-A University and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Korea, participated as a designated discussant, continuing a comparative law discussion on the systems and operations of the highest courts in both countries. During the Q&A session, students actively engaged with questions, leading to a lively debate on the functions and roles of the supreme courts and the future direction of judicial system development.
This event was particularly noted as a rare occasion where legal professionals from the highest courts of both Korea and Japan gathered to discuss the judicial systems of their respective countries, providing participants with a meaningful opportunity to gain both international legal perspectives and academic insight. The event also included discussions on expanding future academic exchanges and cooperation between universities.
Dean Song Si-seop of the School of Law stated, "It was a truly meaningful opportunity to hear directly from a renowned scholar who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan," adding, "In particular, the dialogue with Distinguished Professor Kim Shin, a former Supreme Court Justice of Korea, will have greatly helped students enhance their global perspective and practical understanding."
