Wando Firefighter Tragedy: Construction Company CEO Arrested Over Fears of Evidence Destruction
Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Construction Company CEO on the Night of the 27th
Police Investigation Gains Momentum on Fire Cause and Illegal Employment
The CEO of the construction company identified as the key person responsible for the freezer warehouse fire disaster in Wando County, Jeollanam-do, which resulted in the death of two firefighters, has been arrested. The court accepted the police's concerns about the destruction of evidence, citing conflicting statements between the previously detained worker and the CEO.
According to the Wando Police Station in Jeollanam-do on April 28, the Haenam Branch of the Gwangju District Court issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Kim, the CEO of the construction company, at approximately 9:30 p.m. on April 27. He is facing charges of occupational arson, violations of the Immigration Control Act, and aiding and abetting a criminal. The court had conducted a pretrial detention hearing for Mr. Kim starting at 3:00 p.m. the previous day.

This decision is seen as being significantly influenced by the fact that the statements of Mr. Kim, who allegedly gave the work orders, and a Chinese worker in his 30s—an undocumented immigrant who was previously detained and charged with arson—are in serious conflict.
Given the gravity of the incident, the police determined that if Mr. Kim's custody was not secured, there was a high likelihood that he might destroy evidence, for example by coordinating statements with the worker in an attempt to minimize or evade his own responsibility. The court accepted this reasoning and granted the arrest warrant.
With Mr. Kim now in custody, the investigation into the structural causes of the fire disaster is expected to gain further momentum.

The police plan to intensively question Mr. Kim regarding the habitual employment of undocumented workers and key violations of statutory obligations. In particular, they intend to conduct a thorough investigation into whether a fire shield was properly installed during torch work, whether fire extinguishers were placed at the site, and overall neglect of management and supervision at the scene.
