Several sounds believed to be gunshots were heard during the event, and agents from the Secret Service immediately rushed onto the stage.
Inside the venue, the tense situation continued as people either lay on the floor or hid under tables. President Trump and Vice President JD Vance were immediately evacuated off stage. Armed agents then appeared behind the stage, at one point aiming their weapons toward the crowd.
At the time, Correspondent Jiang was seated right next to President Trump. Despite hearing the gunshots at close range, she remained unfazed, took the stage to guide the proceedings, and then calmly announced the upcoming briefing schedule, helping to organize the situation. Jiang sat in the front row of the White House briefing room and was the first to ask a question during President Trump's press conference following the shooting.

I am relieved that all participants, including the First Lady, are safe."
Online, Jiang is receiving continued praise for remaining composed even while sitting right next to President Trump and for being the first to ask a question at the subsequent briefing. CBS News colleagues Bari Weiss and Tom Sibrowski posted on social media, "She handled the entire situation with composure," and "She continued her coverage on the White House lawn immediately after leaving the stage." Another CBS producer commented, "It was impressive how she seamlessly transitioned from managing the dinner to leading the questioning in the briefing room."
