Received Gold Necklace for Civil Servant Appointment... Incumbent District Council Members Indicted and Detained
Receiving 40 Million Won Worth of Bribes for Civil Servant Appointments and Contract Extensions
Incumbent district council members who are suspected of receiving money and valuables in exchange for civil servant appointments or contract extensions have been indicted and will stand trial while in detention.
The Criminal Division 6 of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office (headed by Chief Prosecutor Jeon Cheol-ho) announced on the 24th that it has indicted Park, the chairperson of the Gangseo-gu Council, and Jeon, the chairperson of the Operations Committee, on charges of bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Both have been indicted while under detention.
Mr. A, who delivered money and valuables to them and acted as an intermediary for bribes from others, has been indicted without detention on charges of offering bribes and receiving bribes as a third party. Four other providers have also been indicted without detention on charges of offering bribes.
Park and Jeon are accused of having received a gold necklace worth 15 million won and 25 million won in cash, totaling 40 million won, from Mr. A between April and July of last year in exchange for the appointment of a civil servant.
They were also found to have received 20 million won from provider B, 8 million won from provider C, and 3 million won from provider D through Mr. A. Additionally, Park is accused of receiving 2 million won from provider E in July 2024 in exchange for extending a civil servant's contract.

A prosecutor stated, "We will do our utmost to maintain the indictment so that we can eradicate the illegal practice of receiving money and valuables in exchange for civil servant appointments or contract extensions."
