This festival is designed to widely promote the historical significance of Pungsan Market, which opened in 1917, as well as the vibrant spirit unique to traditional markets. It is also intended as a cooperative marketplace festival where local small business owners and consumers come together.
During the festival, a variety of programs recreating the scenes of the old marketplace will take place at Pungsan Market. At '1917 Tavern Street,' visitors can enjoy local specialties such as Andong Soju, Korean beef bulgogi, and market-style soup. The 'Marketplace Peddler Market' features a peddler-themed flea market, traditional candy sellers, and puffed rice snacks, offering visitors a unique and nostalgic experience.
Performances to heighten the festive atmosphere are also scheduled. The '1917 Marketplace Performance,' which includes traditional Korean music performances, impromptu singing contests, and busking at the market, is expected to energize various corners of Pungsan Market.
There are also practical benefits for visitors. By purchasing festival-exclusive yeopjeon (traditional brass coin) coupons, visitors can receive a 20% discount, making for a cost-effective shopping experience. Programs such as marketplace auctions and bargaining events, which capture the fun of traditional markets, will also be offered.
In particular, anyone who presents a receipt showing a purchase of at least 30,000 won at the central business district of Pungsan-eup will have the chance to enter a drawing for a pure gold 1 don prize. The prize draw will be held on the day of the event at 4 p.m. on the Jangok stage, and prizes will be awarded only to those present onsite.
This festival is also linked to the 'Traditional Market Tour' course, which connects Hahoe Village, a major tourist site in Andong, with Pungsan Market. Hands-on events such as traditional rice cake pounding, classic games, and a marketplace stamp tour are also prepared for families, making the festival a promising draw for extended stays by tourists.
