Jeonju, the "City of Film," to Be Immersed as Jeonju International Film Festival Opens on April 29
237 Films from 54 Countries and a Special Tribute to the Late Ahn Sung-ki
"We Aim to Make This the Safest Global Festival"
The Jeonju International Film Festival will open on April 29, ushering in another spring for Jeonju, the "city of film." Marking its 27th edition this year, the festival will take place over 10 days until May 8 throughout Jeonju, including the Gosa-dong Cinema Street area.
According to Jeonju City on April 21, this year's festival will screen 237 films from 54 countries. During the submission phase, 1,785 Korean films and 421 international competition entries were received, demonstrating significant interest. The opening ceremony will be held at the Sori Arts Center of Korea's Moak Hall, while the closing ceremony will take place at the Samsung Cultural Center at Jeonbuk National University. The opening film is "My Private Artist," and the closing film is "Namtaeryeong." Works exploring the inner world of artists and narratives reflective of the times will mark both the beginning and end of the festival.
To allow audiences to experience films in everyday spaces, the festival will feature alley screenings around Cinema Street and Hanok Village, as well as "Outdoor Cinema" screenings at the west site of Jeolla Provincial Office. A special program spotlighting the late Ahn Sung-ki, along with events such as "100 Films 100 Posters," "Super Mario Galaxy in Jeonju," and "2026 Jeonju X Majung," have also been organized.
For smooth festival operations, over 400 volunteer staff members, known as "Jiffjigi," will be deployed on site. They will be divided into 11 sectors, handling tasks such as audience guidance and program support. Senior volunteers will also participate, adding to the festival's intergenerational atmosphere.
Jeonju City is also focusing on safety management ahead of the opening. Traffic control, enforcement against illegal parking, street environment maintenance, and inspections of accommodations will be carried out to minimize inconvenience for visitors. The city will strengthen cooperation with related organizations to enhance its ability to respond to large crowds.
