About 30 minutes after the incident, at 7:30 a.m., the assailant took her to a gas station at a nearby intersection. He demanded that she pay for his cigarettes instead of him.
Gas station staff member Abdullrahman Abohatem, who was working at the time, found it suspicious that an adult man was making a student pay for cigarettes. He noticed that Student A was silently mouthing the word "Help."
Although the cashier area was separated by glass—which could have made it easy to ignore the situation—Abohatem took the risk, rushed out from behind the counter, and separated Student A from the assailant. Other nearby students who witnessed the scene also quickly reported the incident to the police and assisted Abohatem. Responding immediately to the report, the police pursued and arrested the suspect as he fled toward the parking lot.
Abohatem told the media, "When I looked outside, I saw the police had just arrived, and I pointed at the assailant and shouted that he was the culprit," describing the situation at the time.
Police investigations confirmed that the suspect and Student A had never met before. Authorities believe the assailant had been looking for an opportunity to kidnap someone and randomly chose his victim. The suspect was also found to have a prior conviction for sexual assault. Adam Alharbi, mayor of Hamtramck, emphasized, "We will make sure the perpetrator receives proper punishment."
