"From Sun to Wind" Siheung City Launches Urban Wind Resource Study
City Begins Six-Month In-Depth Analysis
on Introducing Wind Power Generation in Coastal and Urban Areas
Siheung City in Gyeonggi Province has launched a research study to analyze wind resources in coastal and urban areas, in line with the government's policy to expand renewable energy.
This study aims to systematically analyze wind resources in Siheung’s coastal and urban areas, and to comprehensively review the feasibility and utilization plans for introducing wind power generation.
The research period is approximately six months, from April to September 2026, with a research service budget of 43 million won. The project will be led by DILab Co., Ltd., centered around the Siheung Green Environment Support Center, and will involve participation from professional institutions such as the Korea Institute of Energy Research.
The city plans to focus on the feasibility of introducing wind power generation mainly in urban and onshore areas, rather than offshore wind power, taking into account the local conditions. In particular, by utilizing existing infrastructure such as the Turtle Island Marina Automatic Weather Station (AWS), the city will review both the applicability of large and small-scale wind power generation within the city and demonstration measures.
An interim report meeting is scheduled for July to review the progress of the analysis so far. Additionally, the city is exploring ways to create renewable energy spaces that citizens can experience by linking wind power generation with landscape and tourism resources. The plan is to lay the groundwork for phased commercialization by participating in future public project calls.
Furthermore, the city will also review ways to link the produced renewable energy with local industries, aiming to establish a foundation for a virtuous cycle energy system where production and consumption occur within the region.
This research is intended to proactively respond to the national wind power expansion policy and to serve as basic data for future participation in related public projects. Through this, the city aims to take the lead in establishing an urban wind power generation model while simultaneously promoting energy transition and revitalizing the local economy.
