Trump Says "China Is Pleased With Permanent Opening of Strait of Hormuz"
U.S.-China Summit to Proceed as Planned
U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on April 15 (local time) that he is keeping the Strait of Hormuz permanently open. This appears to emphasize that he is the one resolving the issue of rising international oil prices caused by Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that "China is very pleased that I am keeping the Strait of Hormuz permanently open." He added, "I am doing this for them (China), and also for the world," and continued, "This situation will not happen again."
This is interpreted to mean that, under his recent directive, the U.S. Navy imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian waters from 10 a.m. on the 13th, resulting in increased vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Previously, President Trump noted that 34 vessels had passed through the strait since the start of the counter-blockade and implied that the United States had gained control over the strait.
President Trump also stated that the U.S.-China summit, scheduled for May 14 and 15, will proceed as planned. He said, "China has agreed not to send weapons to Iran," and added, "When I arrive there (Beijing, China) in a few weeks, Chinese President Xi Jinping will give me a big hug."
