"Chilbosando" from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Be Restored as a Ten-Panel Folding Screen in Korea
Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation and Samsung Foundation of Culture Join Forces
Preservation and Restoration Begin at Leeum Museum of Art
The Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation announced on April 15 that, together with the Samsung Foundation of Culture, it will preserve and restore the 19th-century Joseon Dynasty landscape painting "Chilbosando," which is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States, in Korea.
"Chilbosando" is a 19th-century true-view landscape painting that realistically depicts the majestic peaks, unique rock formations, valleys, and waterfalls of Chilbosan Mountain, located in the northeastern part of Hamgyeong Province. The work measures 121.0 by 28.3 cm, painted in light colors on a cotton canvas. Its overall style is similar to Jo Jung-muk's "Gwanbuk Sipseungdo."
The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired this piece in the form of a scroll divided into ten sections. Through this project, it will be restored to its original format as a ten-panel folding screen. The painting has already been brought into Korea and transferred to the Leeum Museum of Art.
An official from the Overseas Foundation stated, "This initiative will shed new light on the international value of Korean cultural heritage and promote the capabilities and status of Korea's preservation technology on the global stage."
